You remember a line: "Grand opening - free coffee". Or a company name on a receipt, or a phone number on a flyer, or a sentence on page 14 of a scanned contract. But the file is a picture, so your computer's search cannot read it.
Here is how to search text inside images and scanned PDFs on Windows and Mac - and find the file by the words you remember.
Why normal search misses words in pictures
Windows Search and Spotlight index text in documents like Word files and text-based PDFs. But a screenshot, a photo of a whiteboard, a poster design or a scanned PDF is just pixels. The words are visible to you, not to your computer, until something reads them - a process called OCR (optical character recognition).
How to search words inside your pictures
Image Finder reads the text in every picture, poster, screenshot and scanned PDF page when it looks through your files. After that, typing a word you remember finds the file.

What it reads
| File | Examples of text it finds |
|---|---|
| Screenshots | Chat messages, error messages, web pages |
| Posters and designs | Headlines, prices, brand names (PSD, AI, PDF and more) |
| Scanned PDFs | Every page of contracts, invoices, letters |
| Office files and PDFs | Every page of Word, PowerPoint and PDF documents |
| Photos | Signs, whiteboards, book covers, receipts |

Real-life searches that work this way
- "Invoice 2024 Acme" - finds a photographed or scanned invoice by the company name and year printed on it.
- "Wi-Fi password" - finds the photo you took of the sticker on the router.
- "Save the date" - finds a wedding invitation design, whatever the file is called.
- "Error 0x80070005" - finds the screenshot you took of an error message months ago.
- "Chapter 4" - finds the right page of a scanned book or handout.
Text search vs. meaning search
Image Finder searches in two ways at once, and the best matches from both come first:
| You type | Text search finds | Meaning search finds |
|---|---|---|
| free coffee | Posters with those words printed | Pictures of coffee cups |
| birthday | Cards that say "birthday" | Photos of cakes and candles |
| sale | Banners saying SALE | Price tags and shop windows |
Tips for scanned documents
- Scan at 300 dpi or more - small text needs detail.
- Keep pages straight; strongly tilted pages are harder to read.
- Phone photos of paper are fine if they are sharp and well lit.
Questions people ask
Can Windows 11 search text inside images?
File Explorer cannot. Some apps, such as the Snipping Tool and the Photos app, can copy text from a single image you open, but they do not search across all your folders. A search app that reads text in every image does.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
Yes. Image Finder reads scanned PDFs page by page, so words on any page can find the file.
Does it need the internet to read the text?
No. Reading text and searching both happen on your computer, offline.
Windows and Mac. Private, offline, no subscription.
