Windows 11 File Explorer has a surprisingly capable search box - if you know what to type. Here are nine tricks that make Windows 11 search for pictures faster, and the one thing it simply cannot do.
1. Show only pictures
Type this in the search box of any folder:
kind:=picture
Everything that is not an image disappears. Add a word after it to search names: kind:=picture beach.
2. Search a whole drive, not one folder
Open This PC or a drive (like D:) first, then search. Windows searches everything inside the place you are in.
3. Find photos by the date they were taken
datetaken:2023 or datetaken:last week uses the date stored by the camera, not the date the file was copied - perfect for phone backups.
4. Search one file type
.png, .heic, .psd or ext:.jpg show only that kind of file. Combine them: .psd OR *.ai.
5. Find big files
size:>10MB finds large photos and design files - handy when your drive is full. size:gigantic works too.
6. Search by camera or dimensions
cameramodel:iPhone or width:>3000 use the details stored inside photos.
7. Save a search you use often
After a search, choose ... > Save search. It becomes a shortcut you can pin to Quick access.
8. Turn on large thumbnails
View > Extra large icons turns any search result into a contact sheet you can scan by eye.
9. Make sure your folders are indexed
Search is faster and finds more when the folder is indexed: Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows > Enhanced, or add your photo folders under Customize search locations.
Where File Explorer stops
Every trick above searches names and details. None of them looks at the picture. So these searches find nothing:
- "red car" (when the photo is named
IMG_4821.JPG) - "the poster that says grand opening"
- "every photo of my sister"
- "the design with this flower in it"
0 hours a year spent looking for files - with a search that takes a second, that is about 0 working days back.
Search what is in the picture
For that, you need a search that has looked at your pictures. Image Finder for Windows adds it to Windows 10 and 11: describe the picture, drop in a similar one, pick a face or draw a box around one part - and the file comes up in about a tenth of a second, from every folder and drive you added.

Search syntax cheat sheet
| Type this | It finds |
|---|---|
kind:=picture | Only pictures |
kind:=picture datetaken:2024 | Photos taken in 2024 |
.psd OR .ai | Photoshop and Illustrator files |
size:>20MB kind:=picture | Large pictures |
cameramodel:iPhone | Photos from iPhones |
name:invoice kind:=picture | Pictures with "invoice" in the name |
datemodified:today | Files changed today |
When Windows search is slow or empty
- Indexing is still running. Large folders take time to index the first time. Check progress in Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
- The drive is not indexed. External and network drives are often not indexed - Windows then searches them slowly, file by file.
- The search started in the wrong place. Windows only searches inside the folder you are in.
- You are searching words that are not in the name. That is where content search comes in.
Real searches, start to finish
Tricks are easier to remember with a real job attached. Here are four common picture hunts and the exact search to type.
"The photos from our trip last summer"
Open the drive that holds your photos, then type:
kind:=picture datetaken:7/1/2025..8/31/2025
The two dots mean "between". Windows uses the date the camera wrote into the photo, so it works even when you copied the files years later. Switch to Extra large icons and scroll.
"That huge banner file that is filling my drive"
kind:=picture size:>50MB
Sort by Size, biggest first. This is how you find forgotten 300 MB PSD files and RAW bursts you never needed.
"Every PNG I downloaded this month"
Open Downloads and type:
*.png datemodified:this month
Screenshots, logos and graphics saved from the web are usually PNG.
"Photos taken on my old phone"
cameramodel:"Galaxy S10" or cameramake:Apple
Useful when you merge photo backups from several phones and want to see one set at a time.
Make File Explorer show more of the picture
Search results are only as useful as what you can see in them. A few settings make a big difference:
Indexing: what it is and why it matters
Windows keeps an index - a list of files and their details - so searches do not have to read the whole drive every time. Folders that are not indexed are still searched, but slowly, and some details (like date taken) may be missed.
| Setting | What it searches | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Classic | Your libraries and desktop | Most home PCs |
| Enhanced | The whole PC | Photos spread over several drives |
| Custom locations | Only the folders you add | Big photo drives you search often |
Indexing a big photo drive takes a while the first time. Leave the PC on and plugged in; after that it keeps itself up to date.
The Photos app: the other half of Windows picture search
The Photos app shows pictures from your Pictures folder and the folders you add, grouped by date. On some newer PCs it can also find photos by what is in them. It is good for browsing recent photos - but it does not cover design files, PDFs or every drive, and it does not search inside archives.

Image Finder finds both the original and every edited copy of a photo when you search with one of them - something no name search can do.
When to stop typing tricks
File Explorer search is perfect when you know a name, a date, a size or a type. As soon as what you remember is what the picture shows - "the red flower print", "the slide with the bar chart", "every photo of Grandpa" - no amount of syntax helps. That is the moment to switch to a search that has looked at the pictures themselves.

Questions people ask
How do I search only for pictures in Windows 11?
Type kind:=picture in the File Explorer search box. Start from the drive or folder you want to search.
Can Windows 11 search inside photos for objects?
Not in File Explorer. The Photos app has some AI search on Copilot+ PCs for photos it knows about. To search every folder and design file by what is in the picture, use a content search app such as Image Finder.
Why does Windows search not find my photos?
Usually because the folder is not indexed, or because you are searching words that are not in the file name. Index the folder, and for words that describe the picture, use content search.
How do I search for photos between two dates in Windows?
Type datetaken: followed by two dates with two dots between them, for example datetaken:1/1/2024..3/31/2024.
Why are my PSD and AI files blank in File Explorer?
Windows has no built-in previews for most design formats. A file viewer or a search app with real previews, such as Image Finder, shows them.
