About this tool
A design repeats without a visible line only when its right edge continues into its left edge and its bottom edge into its top. Most artwork does not: put two copies side by side and a straight line shows where they meet. This tool takes a strip at each edge and joins it to the opposite side. Smart join looks for the path where the two sides match best and cuts along it, so motifs are not doubled; soft blend fades the two sides into each other; mirror flips the design four ways, which always joins. The block is a little smaller than your design (the strips are used for the joins), or double for mirror. Everything happens in your browser - your design is never uploaded.
Questions
What is a seamless repeat block?
A block whose right edge continues into its left edge and its bottom edge into its top. Put copies of it side by side and on top of each other and no line shows where they meet - the design runs on like one piece of cloth or paper.
Which way should I choose - smart join, soft blend or mirror?
Smart join suits most prints and textures: it cuts along the line where the two sides look most alike, so motifs are not doubled. Soft blend suits soft backgrounds, skies and watercolours. Mirror always joins perfectly but makes the design symmetric - good for borders, damask and ethnic designs.
Why is the block smaller than my design?
A strip at each edge is used to make the join, so the block is that much smaller (set by "Join width"). With mirror the block is twice your design in both directions.
What size do I give the screen printer?
Open "More options", type the block width in cm and choose 300 dpi - the downloaded block is exactly that size, ready for the screen, the CAD software or digital printing.
Is my design uploaded?
No. The block is made inside your browser, on your own computer. Your design never leaves your PC.
